Mammoth Cave National Park

Here is our second visit on our first weekend trip to Mammoth Cave National Park down near Bowling Green, KY (about 3 hours from our house).

The next few pictures are the above ground hiking trails.

These next pictures are of our underground cave tour which was only about 2 miles and lasted 2 hours. These pictures hardly do justice to the amazing caves that are about 310ft below the surface. The caves remain 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit all year long regardless of the outside temperature. Needless to say, it was a nice break from the 100 degree weather outside!

This is where they mined Salt Petre for gun powder for the War of 1812.

Back in the 1800s they used to use a candle to burn the names of visitors with smoke onto the cave ceilings. Surprisingly, the writings were very legible.

This picture hardly captures the height of these stairs--about 10-15 stories high with nothing but air surrounding them. But so amazing...

The pictures of the inside of the cave are very impressive. It remindeed me of the time we went on the tour of the salt mines in Bertschesgarden, Germany. They were also underground. Rex was 3, Brandie was 2 and there was no Amber or Erika yet. Grandma and Grandpa came with us on that trip. My mon and Dad, I mean. They came to visit us while dad was there.

The weekend trips look like they have been a hit. Good idea to go to escape to the caves when it is so stinking hot! I wish we had more exciting weekend adventures around here, but oh well.

By the way, the digital scrapbooking is so much fun! You use a program like Photoshop and basically you use images of papers and design elements to make your pages. (There are a TON of websites out there of people who design stuff.) Then you can either keep them on your computer or print them out. I print mine at Costco from their photo lab. They end up looking pretty realistic. And at least for me, it is so much easier.
If you're interested in trying it out, you can download a free 30 day trial of Adobe Photoshop Elements on Adobe's website.

Annie and I agreed that our favorite picture is the 2nd picture of the bunch (Andrew modeling his BYU apparel). It really looks like Andrew has had past experience... hmm... interesting...
